Faith Communities
Faith communities can be central to the identities of many individuals.
They can also be sites that house structural stigma. For example, mental illness and particularly suicidal ideation may be shrouded in shame in certain faith communities, due to it being deemed as a sin. This may in turn impact an individual’s sense of self and make it more difficult to access both interpersonal and external support systems. In what other ways do you think faith communities can be sites of structural stigma?
