Clinical Settings
Clinical settings can be sites that embody structural stigma
Often, patients with mental illness are treated differently than those without. For example, a woman with depression and abdominal pain arrives at the ED. She has a history of trauma and substance abuse. She is criticized for consuming alcohol by medical professionals and told it is her own fault she is in this position. While she is treated for pancreatitis, she does not wish to return to the hospital again. In what ways do you think structural stigma can manifest itself within the site of the workplace?
